Nike Dunk SB – What Is the Fuss

By: Harry Peter

Rather anti-climactically, Nike Dunk SB isn’t the shoe to symbolize modernity; nothing more than simple sneakers. There isn’t a celebrity whom you can point to for having endorsed the brand, if you don’t count buying a pair as endorsement. Yet, something special is appealing to sneakerheads who care nothing to stand in lines whole nights to buy these hoary shoes with vile bands?

People like me tend to regard shoe collectors as aliens, the good for nothing animals that waste money on something you aren’t sure of wearing even as a collector may get hypnotized at the mention of it. Being possessive of Nike Dunks SB shoes, they are happy to be in possession of it even if they get condemned to lock it up for the rest of their lives.

Sneakerheads keep talking about their fad in ‘sneaker lingo’ which sounds no better than a foreign language. For them, F.O.T.B. stands for fresh out of the box and Deadstock for a never used shoe.

Is Nike Dunk SB worth of all this fuss? Let us see.

Nike was imaginative in brand positioning exercise for Nike Dunk SB; it contracted eight university basketball teams to wear Nike Dunks to all their matches. As they say, the rest is history. Actually Nike was inspired by the skateboarders wearing the Dunks which prompted it to devise strategies for skateboard shoes; promptly the think-tank at Nike projected that a re-release of a classic Dunk would help them test waters instead of a designated skateboard release directly.

Later, strategies were drawn up and Nike Dunk SB was out successfully. Nike got major skateboard manufacturers to redesign suitable skateboards for their shoes, to be named Nike Dunk SB. The SB Dunks were released in small test quantities at boutiques and skate shops, which is a standard practice now. It priced it low and released only 20/30 pairs at a shop; the Pigeon Dunk SB was sold in New York only leaving those in far off places to hire somebody to buy for them standing in queues. Yet, Nike articulates that since enough stuff is being released all the time, it meets the demand!

Shoe collecting is no longer old fashioned. There are many new interesting turns to this old hobby too. It is a business of sorts for sneakerheads too. You are no more buying a single pair for your use but two to sell it for a profit. Shopkeepers are getting smarter too; they only sell one pair per person. Sometime ago my friend’s neighbors mistook him to be running a big business when they saw UPS trucks frequenting to his home. But the guy was buying Nike Dunk SB shoes at release prices (no marks for you for guessing how) and sell on eBay for over $350, and repeat this all over again! I surprised if this is how sneakerheads survive. Jesus! There should be a better way to respect and love the most important possession of your life, after all.
