  • Allergy testing is the term used to refer to the procedure of identifying allergies and the allergens that cause them. Allergen refers to the substance that triggers an allergic reaction on the patient. Through allergy testing, the patient knows his allergens, how to avoid them and treatments for his allergies.

  • What are the different types of allergy tests?


  • The most common type of allergy testing is the skin test. With this type, the skin is exposed to the suspected allergen and observed. The skin will react on the allergen and the allergist or the immunologist will base his findings on the skin’s reaction. Other types of allergy tests include the Prick Test, Blood Test, Intradermal Allergy Test, Scratch Test and Challenge Test.

  • How will you know if you need to undergo allergy testing?


  • To be able to judge whether you need to see an allergist and subject yourself for allergy testing, you have to look for allergy symptoms. The most common allergy symptoms include the following:

    • Itchy eyes, nose and throat;

    • Itchy and reddish skin;

    • Blemishes on the skin;

    • Hives;

    • Swelling;

    • Nasal or chest congestion;

    • Watery eyes; and

    • Sneezing and coughing.


  • Why do you have to undergo allergy testing?


  • To confirm your suspicions about possible allergies, you need to undergo allergy testing. There is no way you can manage your allergies if you don’t know which substances or ingredients to avoid. Through allergy testing, you will be able to identify the exact allergens. Your allergies will also be treated.

  • Who can undergo allergy testing?


  • Anyone can be tested for possible allergies. Adults and kids alike can undergo allergy testing. Allergy chooses no one. Even kids can have allergies so allergy testing should also be administered to them. If performed by a qualified allergist or immunologist, allergy testing is very safe for all ages.
