By: Allen Iser

If you were hoping for a wake-up call to push you to quit smoking for good, here it is. I have created a listing of the shocking facts on smoking and the impact it can have on your life if you don't stop the habit.

Here are Some Facts to Start off with:

-Worldwide, tobacco use is the cause of more than 5 million deaths a year

-Within United States, cigarette smoking is responsible for approx. one in five deaths per year, or approx. 438,000 deaths per year

-Current trends show that tobacco use could cause more than 8 million deaths annually by 2030

-Cigarette smoking is the most preventable cause of death in the U.S.

There is no question smoking kills. On average, those who smoke die 13 to 14 years earlier than nonsmokers! That translates to 12-14 minutes taken from your life with every cigarette! Each and every one of those cigarettes you smoke brings you closer and closer to an early grave.

Some More Reasons to Quit Smoking for Good:

-Food does not taste as good for smokers. When a smoker's nasal passage is harmed by the effects of all the chemical products found within cigarettes their ability to savor different tastes or aromas is lessened.

-A correlation was discovered linking smoking and brain damage/premature senility

-Smokers find themselves ill more often than non-smokers. The average smoker is absent 7 1/2 work days per year compared to 4 1/2 for a non-smoker

-Smoking makes people slightly moody and argumentative, in part due to subconscious understanding of the above mentioned points

-If you smoke, your body will need more rest than a non-smoker. Also, smokers don't sleep as sound as non-smokers

This is just a small number of the side-effects of smoking. There are plenty more reasons to quit the habit once and for all. We may realize smoking is not healthy, however it helps to stop and think about these statistics to wake us up to the severity of what we are truly doing to ourselves.
